After finishing sixth in the Premier League, Liverpool looks all geared up to make a comeback this year as they complete their fourth summer signing.
Midfielder James Milner, goalkeeper Adam Bogdan and striker Danny Ings were until now, the three new signings of the Reds, but now England U-19 player, Joe Gomez has also entered the list – after agreeing to depart from Charlton and join Liverpool.
The amount with which Liverpool bought him as well as the time span of the deal has stayed hidden. In an official statement, Liverpool said that Gomez had agreed a “long-term deal” with the Reds.
A report by Mirror has said that 18-year-old Gomez chose Liverpool over the likes of Borsussia Dortmund, Arsenal and Manchester City because the Reds’ contract included a clause that will allow him to leave for 3.5 million pounds that can extend up to 5 million pounds.
After finishing the signing, Gomez said that it’s a “dream come true” for him. “It’s a bit surreal and it hasn’t really hit me yet. But I’m buzzing and just excited to get started.”
Liverpool has been one of the most successful clubs in the Premier League history besides Manchester United. So, did that play a role in his decision?
“The club has got great history and it’s a great club, and one that I’ve always been following when I was young,” he clarified.
According to NESN, Brendan Rodger’s presence in the club as its manager, and his history of giving the young players a chance to shine convinced Gomez to depart from Charlton.
“I have met him once and he seemed really nice. It made me want to come here even more really. He just told me how good it is here and how he thinks he can help me get better, the opportunities I would get – things that would make me want to come to Liverpool,” he added.
Capable of playing both center back as well as full back, in the same report Gomez regarded himself as a “ball-playing center back” with strength, speed and leadership values.
Gomez made 24 appearances for Charlton last season, and showed quite potentiality for the top clubs to raise interest.
With experienced players like Martin Skrtel, Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho, Gomez has many opportunities to learn. Moreover, if he shines through then the Reds actually promises to give a good season for their fans.
