Time: 3:30 am IST
Date: 21st Feb
Venue: Hagley Oval
The Hagley Oval plays host to two sides who seem to be pretty much even as far as fortunes are concerned. Pakistan take on West Indies in a contest that both sides would solely look for to pick up the crucial win and kick start their world cup campaign.
Nothing could be more demoralizing for Pakistan than a loss to India right in the opening fixture. On a track that offered plenty to the batsmen, Pakistan failed to chase 300 and expectedly collapsed, handing over the game to the former champions. Apart from Misbah and some good pace bowling, Pakistan never really looked like a side competing for the trophy. Against the West Indies however, they can’t afford such slip ups. Misbah was quoted saying that a loss in the next match would as well end their campaign and hence they will look to put up a solid performance.
West Indies joined the elite list of sides that have succumbed to Ireland’s aggression and this would be an achievement they’d rather forget about. Their inability to defend a 300+ score against a side like Ireland raised serious questions about the lack of depth in their bowling attack. The likes of Bravo and Pollard were missed one may feel, but the Windies take no prisoners and will be looking to make amends against Pakistan. The Islanders have a young captain in Jason Holder when compared to his experienced counterpart and this may be one of the deciding factors in tomorrow’s game. All in all, both sides will look for the all important win to push their need to land a quarter final spot.
X Factor – The similarity here is that both sides will miss their ‘go to man’ in Narine and Ajmal who’s bowling actions were subject to scrutiny, thereby making them miss their ticket down under. Despite the conditions, the duo were always favorites to feature on any track. This paves way for young spinners Yasir Shah and Nikita Miller to make their marks.
