The third quarter final takes us to the picturesque landscape of the Adelaide Oval as hosts Australia are all set to face a resurgent Pakistan side. Will Misbah’s men pull off the improbable or will Clarke and co show who’s boss?
Australia were expected to breeze past the group stages and they did just that. The 1 wicket loss to New Zealand hardly derailed their campaign as they took apart pretty much every other side that they faced. They now have their task cut out as the red hot Pakistanis await them in the quarter finals. Warner and Finch have been providing them with solid starts and are ably backed by the middle order trio of Watson, Clarke and Smith. But it is the Australian bowling unit that has been spitting fire. Starc, Johnson and Marsh have made great use of the surfaces destroying the opposition to bits. They will now to target a fragile Pakistani top order and invariable enforce a collapse. With the ball swinging in the Oval, the trio will pretty much be impossible to contain.
After back to back embarrassing defeats, Pakistan held their own and rose to the occasion. With 4 wins on the trot, Misbah and co now find themselves 3 wins away from repeating the feat of 1992. But, they face an acid test in the form of a cutthroat Australian side who will pretty much do anything to put their opposition in their place. Positives for the Asian outfit will be their bowling unit. Backed by 4 quick bowlers who get a good amount of reverse as well, Pakistan too will use the surface to good effect. But, it is their batting that has raised a few eyebrows. Repeated collapses in most of their group stage fixtures has been the sole cause of their misery. Misbah has bailed them out on most occasions no doubt, But, if he too perishes, then the daemons of the past might just derail Pakistan’s campaign once again.
X Factor – Fast bowling will dominate proceedings in this fixture and will be a treat to watch for the conventional fans. With both Pakistan and Australia opting for the extra bowler, the contest looks even stevens. But, home conditions and familiarity might just favor the mighty Aussies. But, don’t rule Pakistan out, for they are pretty much unstoppable on their day.
