Today, Thursday August 28, 2014 third round of the World Badminton Championship at the Ballerup Super Arena in Copenhagen will see India’s champion shuttler Saina Nehwal and last year’s bronze medallist PV Sindhu play.

After Parupalli Kashyap’s early exit, both Saina and Sindhu remain India’s best medal hopes in the World event as Saina, who has returned after an injury, played satisfactorily in her second round match. “I could feel the improvement happening,” Saina declared after the match but cautioned against big hopes saying, “I thought I could get a big title, but I wasn’t expecting it to come so soon. I am able to take a lot from that.”

Saina will play the third round against Japan’s 13th-ranked Sayaka Takahashi, whom she had defeated during their one-off clash in the Indonesian Superseries in 2013.

And PV Sindhu is facing a tough opponent in South Korea’s champion Yeon Ju Bae, whom she had faced twice in the past and lost both to Ju Bae. Sindhu is slightly more confident this time after her convincing straight-game victory over Olga Golovanova of Russia. She will be vying for a chance to defeat Ju Bae this time.

In the men’s singles, Kidambi Srikanth faces the second seed Chinese Long Chen, in their first meeting and odds are that the Chinese champion is the favourite for quarterfinals and may defeat Srikanth. Otherwise, Srikanth too comes to the match after a straight-game victory over Englishman Rajiv Ouseph.

The men’s doubles pair Manu Attri and B Sumeeth Reddy will face second seeds Yong Dae Lee and Yeon Seong Yoo of South Korea, who had defeated India in their previous match. But both Manu and Sumeeth are confident after scoring a straight-game victory over Hirokatsu Hashimoto and Noriyasu Hirata of Japan.
