A national-level woman shooter on Saturday filed First Information Report in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri police station alleging that her coach spiked her drink and raped her, sending shockwaves across the already-battered sports community.
The complainant said her coach, an Arjuna Award winner, had been training her for the past two years at the Sports Authority of India’s shooting range. When he visited her house in government quarters where she lives alone on Nov. 12 to celebrate her birthday, he mixed her drink with sedatives and raped her when she was unconscious, she said in her complaint.
“During the party, the coach allegedly offered her a spiked soft drink which she consumed and became semi-conscious. The coach then allegedly forced himself on her,” explained a police officer based on the FIR.“Her medical examination was conducted at a government hospital and the FIR was registered. A local NGO has been roped in for her counselling,” he said.
She said he had denied making any promise to marry her later and even threatened to kill her when she confronted him after the rape. Police officials have registered a complaint, and sent the woman shooter for a medical test that confirmed her rape, PTI reported.
India’s sports scene is beset with allegations and scams over relationships and in some cases coaches assaulting women players during the camps and at sports venues.
