MTV Awards Tonight: Post-Nicki Minaj Spat, Other Celebs Foray on to Centre-Stage

Miley Cyrus, who won the top prize at MTV Awards two years ago, will return tonight with her special performance and as a host of the evening show that will reveal the winners and losers alike this night.

She said she was hosting the event after the request came from Van Toffler, show’s producers, who is leaving the company and he wanted the show to be his last shebang. “It’s like ‘Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” she said.

On his part, Toffler told ABC News: “She has a nice, fun history with the show, but she’s grown up since then.”

The singer is likely to host mere “fun skits” and no more, with plenty of performances by other celebrities such as Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award recipient Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Justin Bieber and Nick Jonas.

Otherwise the nominees include Pharrell Williams, Demi Lovato, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Tori Kelly, Weeknd, A$AP Rocky and Twenty One Pilots. Kendrick Lamar leads with five nominations, including video-of-the-year, alone (“Alright”) and with Swift (“Bad Blood”). They face Beyonce (“7/11”), Ed Sheeran (“Thinking Out Loud”) and Mark Ronson with Bruno Mars (“Uptown Funk”). Coming to awards, all eyes are on Nicki Minaj and Beyonce this time.

They will make the “show really special,” said Toffler. “People feel the stage is special when they go up there to perform… they’re mindful of the heritage of the prior performances in the show and… they feel like, ‘I wanna create a moment.'”

“It’s gonna be a wild and crazy night,” agreed executive producer Garrett English. “There are gonna be moments that will be resonating for days to come, I’m sure.”

The 2015 MTV VMAs will air live from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Sunday, August 30, at 9 p.m. ET and the pre-show performances will begin at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
