India vs Pakistan Match at 3:00 PM IST at Edgbaston, UK;

Preview:

A once-in three years event, India-Pakistan clash is a rare momentum that nobody wants to miss, not the least Indians and Pakistanis world over, not merely in the sub-continent. In the last five years, the two teams have met only in ICC events and never in bilateral events, making the match today a rare feast for cricket lovers in both the nations.

In this century, India and Pakistan have played 49 One-Day Internationals, with India winning 24 to Pakistan winning 25, while both of them played just 9 ODI since 2011 and India has won 6 of them and Pakistan three. Indian team was the last to reach UK for the trophy and Pakistan had more than enough practice and exposure to the local factors. Last time both India and Pakistan teams clashed at Adelaide in Australia in March 2015 for the Champions Trophy.

India’s strength lies in its best 5 bowlers either a spiner or a pacer while in Hardik Pandya, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Kedar Jadhav, it may find the best batsmen to offshoot runs on go.

Pakistan has relatively newer players though some of them like Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Hafeez and Sarfraz Ahmed, the captain, have established themselves in their Carribbean tour recently. Players like Azhar Ali, Ahmed Shehzad, Mohammad Amir and Babar Azam aren’t exactly new faces to write off with Fakhar Zaman, Haris Sohail and Junaid Khan may chip in better, whenever required. Faheem Ashraf, the 23-year-old who smashed 64 not out off 30 balls in the warm-up against Bangladesh, is here today for India to reckon his presence.

The pitch at Edgbaston is not a bowler-friendly one that may put more pressure on pace bowlers while Indian spinners may reap benefit that may be elusive if Pakistan handles them accurately.

With rains possibly playing havoc during the warm ups, today’s match also owes to a great extent on how good the pitch would be and how many overs will be left out of the match.

In Virat Kohli’s words: “We don’t play them often. So they’ve always been a team that can surprise any team on the day that they play well. You know of their abilities. But you’re not too aware of how they react in different situations.” Kohli vowed to focus on his team’s skill rather.

The venue is equally interesting. Indians and Pakistanis make up nearly 20 per cent of Birmingham’s population with 13 per cent from Pakistan and the presence of fans and their cheers to give a kick to the teams today.

Prediction: India will win unless Pakistan team throws out surprises at the last minute or rain plays havoc.
