Veteran editor, writer and chairman of Prasar Bharati M.V. Kamath died on Thursday morning in Manipal, Karnataka, aged 93 after few days of hospitalization.
His nephew Jairam Kamath said MV Kamath breathed his last around 6:30 am. "He had been ailing for sometime due to old-age related problems and had been admitted to a hospital here. We shall perform the funeral rites today (Thursday)," he told IANS.
Awarded Padma Bhushan in 2004, Madhav Vittal Kamath was born in Udupi on September 7, 1921 and completed his B.Sc. in Physics and Chemistry in 1941. For the first five years he worked in the field of Chemistry and then changed his career into journalism. He worked as the editor of ‘The Sunday Times (India)’ for two years during 1967-69 and went to Washington as Correspondent of ‘The Times of India’ for more than 10 years until 1978. Later, he served as editor of ‘The Illustrated Weekly of India’.
Kamath remained the Honorary Director of Manipal Institute of Communication until his death and he has authored nearly 40 books. He was known as the backbone of the T.M.A. Pai foundation.
