Veteran Actor Director Dasari Narayana Rao Dies, Film Field Mourns

Dasari Narayana Rao, who revolutionized Telugu film industry with his typical moral and social themes for over four decades and worked as Mining Minister in Manmohan singh ministry died aged 75 on Tuesday after a prolonged illness.

He was last seen on TV receiving an award from Chiranjeevi, who visited his house and presented it to him owing to his illness. Dasari Narayana Rao also holds the Guinness record for directing the most number of films. He is survived by his sons Arun Kumar Dasari and Hari Hara Prabhu.

Way back in 1971, when he first went to narrate a story to a potential movie producer, he had to list almost 60 themes though none of them were accepted. When he became an ace director in Telugu films, he wrote all the dialogues and directed all the 60 themes in different films of repute, starring famous stars and newcomers alike. In Telugu, he directed 140 films and acted himself in more than 100 films.Dasari Narayana Rao 2009.jpg

Dasari Narayana Rao began his film career with a hit film “Tata Manavadu” in 1972 with a message to respect the elderly and the songs were still in vogue. He never looked back after its success. His last film was “Erra Bus” in 2014. He had also set his foot in Hindi film field with two box-office winners: Swarg Narak (1978), a family drama, and Jyoti Bane Jwala (1980), a hard-core revenge action thriller.

His Jyoti Bane Jwala, starring Jeetendra, became one of the biggest hits of the year in 1984. His other Hindi titles included Asha Jyoti, Aaj Ka MLA Ram Avtar, Yaadgar, Haisiyat, Zakhmi Sher, Wafadar and Santan.

Later, he entered politics, started his own Telugu newspaper called Udayam to rival Ramoji Rao’s Eenadu and became Rajya Sabha MP of the Congress. He was among the Congress MPs who had sworn total allegiance to Sonia Gandhi in 2004  and appealed her in a live television broadcast that she should become the country’s Prime Minister despite Sushma Swaraj’s threat to shave off her hair. He was one among the few emotive speakers who had impressed Sonia. Later, he served as Minister for Coal in Manmohan Singh ministry until corruption scandals hit him and saw his exit from politics.
