Ugadi or New year today called “Manmadha Nama Samvatsra” has made the Telugus, Kannadigas and Marathis celebrate the festival with colourful mango leaves donning the entrances and arches in streets with flowers and Ugadi Pachadi being distributed among relatives and friends.

Ugadi, which means the beginning of a new age in Sanskrit, denotes the the first day of Chaitra month in the Hindu Saka calendar Saka as per the Panchanga.

Called Gudi Padwa in Marathi, the festival is celebrated by the Rajasthani Marwaris as their new year day Thapna. Sindhis celebrate it as their New Year day Cheti Chand, while Manipuris also celebrate their New Year (Sajibu nongma panba) on the same day.

More than the usual festive mood, Ugadi Pachadi or Bevu Bella is what matters on the day and it is a special dish of 6 tastes denoting sadness, happiness, anger, fear, disgust, surprise with Neem Buds/Flowers for its bitterness, signifying Sadness, jaggery and ripe banana pieces for sweetness, signifying happiness, green Chilli/Pepper for its hot taste, signifying Anger, salt for saltiness, signifying Fear, tamarind Juice for its sourness, signifying disgust and unripened Mango for its tang, signifying Surprise.

Ugadi also marks the recitation of Almanac and people traditionally gather to listen to the recitation of the religious Panchangam of the new year, and the general forecast of the year to come, called the Panchanga Sravanam.
