In another incident of ageing aircraft still in use, Indonesia’s Trigan aircraft which is 27 years old in operation crashed in the mountainous region of Papua on Sunday with 54 onboard, including 5 children and 5 crew members.
“The Trigana aircraft that lost contact has been found at Camp 3, Ok Bape district in the Bintang Mountains regency,” confirmed air transport director general of Indonesia Suprasetyo. “Residents provided information that the aircraft crashed into Tangok mountain.”
The aircraft is ATR 42-300 which was built in France and Italy, would have been banned in Europe as these aircraft are banned by EU since 2007 due to safety concerns.
The plane was flying between Jayapura’s Sentani Airport and Oksibil, when it crashed. Last year, one aircraft belonging to AirAsia too crashed into the Java Sea. In July, a military transport plane crashed killing more than 100 people.
