Here is a brief timeline of Sathya Sai Baba’s life.
Nov. 23, 1926 — Born as Sathyanarayana Raju to Eswaramma and Raju Ratnakaram in Puttaparthi, Andhra Pradesh.
May 23, 1940 — Sathya called his parents and borthers and began to materialize sweets and other items in air. His father thought that he was bewtiched and took a stick and asked him who he was. Then he answered “I am Sai Baba,” a reference to Sai Baba of Shirdi, who died 8 years before Sathya was born. Henceforth, he came to be known as Sathy Sai Baba.
1944 — Sathya Sai Baba renounced relationship with his family and relatives and began to live in a temple built for him near Puttaparthi.
1950 — Prashanti Nilayam, the current abode of Baba was constructed and he moved into it.
1954 — Baba established a free General Hospital in Puttaparthi.
June 29, 1968 — Sathya Sai Baba made his first and only trip overseas, to Nairobi, Uganda.
1968 — Set up Dharmakshetra or Sathyam Mandir in Mumbai.
1973 — Established Shivam Mandir in Hyderabad.
1981 — Set up Sundaram Mandir in Chennai.
June 6, 1993 — Assailants entered Baba’s bedroom and four of them were killed two Ashram volunteers were killed in the skirmish. Baba began undertaking welfare projects.
March 1995 — Started the water project to provide drinking water to 1.2 million people in the drought-prone Rayalaseema region.
1999 — Established the Ananda Nilayam Mandir in Madurai, Tamil Nadu.
2001 — Sathya Sai Baba established a free Super Speciality hospital in Bangalore to benefit the poor.
2005 — Failing health confined Baba to wheelchair and began to greet his disciples from it.
2006 — Baba suffered a fractured hip when a boy on an iron stool fell on him. Baba began to greet his devotees from a car or porte chair.
March 28, 2011 — Satya Sai Baba was admitted to the super-specialty hospital at Prashantigram at Puttaparthi with breathing problems.
April 24, 2011 — Sathay Sai Baba died as his respiratory system failed on Sunday morning at 6.25 am.
