Sony launched its latest smartphone Xperia Z4 in Japan ahead of releasing it in the global market, with no major changes in its look from the previous handset the Xperia Z3. The device is priced 7,000 yen, plus tax. The product will be put on display at Sony’s Ginza showroom in Tokyo from April 22.
Breaking from the tradition of too much of fanfare before launching the handset, Sony quietly announced it at home in Tokyo first, before launching it globally eventually, keeping up its policy of launching a new handset every year. The Sony Xperia Z3 was launched at IFA in September 2014.
The Sony Xperia Z4 runs on Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system with a 5.2-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) Triluminos display, besides featuring Sony’s X-Reality mobile picture engine.
Powered by recent 64-bit octa-core (quad-core 1.5GHz + quad-core 2GHz) Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor, the Xperia Z4 comes with high-end 3GB RAM and an inbuilt memory of 32GB, expandable up to 128 GB with a microSD card.
Instead of a cover flap for the USB port, this time Sony has provided a waterproof USB port. The device comes with a high-resolution audio with LDAC compression technology.
Encased in a metal frame, the Xperia Z4 has some older features such as the 20.7-megapixel autofocus rear camera modified with 1/2.3-inch Exmor RS BSI sensor, Bionz image processor, and a pulsed LED flash.
The front camera of the Sony Xperia Z4 with a 5.1-megapixel strength comes with Exmor R BSI sensor, compared to Xperia Z3’s 2.2-MP front camera. It has a 25mm wide angle lens, apart from the image stabilisation feature. With a battery pack of 2930mAh, the device joins the high-end category.
In addition, the Xperia Z4 comes with an IPX5/IPX8 equivalent certification, making it waterproof like its predecessor smartphones and IP6X certification making it dustproof too.
Available in 4 colours — white, black, copper, aqua green — the Xperia Z4 measures 146x72x6.9mm and weighs 144 grams. On connectivity front, it includes usual features such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi with hotspot, 3G, 4G LTE, GPS/ A-GPS, Glonass, Micro-USB, DLNA, and NFC.
Sony this time offered accessories including a new case with a window and a new desktop holder along with the Xperia Z4.The device will be available in Japan this summer and is likely to be released in other Asian and American markets by Spring this year.
