Bollywood top actor Shah Rukh Khan has been honoured with Britain’s Global Diversity Award 2014 for both his acting career and philanthropic endeavours, joining the movie legends Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Jackie Chan.
Speaker of Britain’s House of Commons John Bercow awarded the honour at a special ceremony held on Saturday night to Shah Rukh Khan, who has already received 14 Filmfare awards. “He is also active in the fields of charity, particularly helping women who have suffered acid attacks,” Bercow noted while presenting the award.
The 48-year-old actor, who is the second richest actor in the world, has described it as a big honour. “This is a special day for me and I am very humbled to receive the award instituted by Rainbow Foundation,” Shah Rukh said. “My first visit to England was when I was 27 in connection with the first film Baazigar. I have got lot more than I deserved.”
Now that he was given the honour, the actor said he would devote more for the community, particularly the neglected community. “I will try to do in a small away, whatever I can,” he said. Keith Vaz, Founder of the Rainbow Foundation, said, “Shah Rukh Khan is regarded as one of the most famous actors on planet earth.”
Other recipients of the award from Bollywood include Amitabh Bachchan, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, actor Jackie Chan, Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, American civil rights leader Jesse Jackson, Formula One racer Lewis Hamilton, music legend Dionne Warwick among others.
Shah Rukh Khan also owns Red Chillies Entertainment that has produced box office hits like Ra-One and Chennai Express. Known as “Baadshah of Bollywood” or “King Khan” or SRK, he has appeared in over 50 Hindi films in genres including romance, action and comedy.
His work in Bollywood has earned him the government’s Padma Shri in 2005 and the Government of France awarded him the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2007, and again in 2014, he was given the Légion d’honneur, France’s highest civilian award. Khan was the second-richest actor in the world in 2014 with a net worth of $600 million.
Khan started his career in TV serials in the late 1980s and entered Bollywood in 1992 with Deewana. Some of his best films include Darr (1993), Baazigar (1993), Anjaam (1994), Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Devdas (2002), Swades (2004), Chak De! India (2007), My Name Is Khan (2010), Ra-One (2012), Chennai Express (2013) and the upcoming Happy New Year (2014).
Shah Rukh Khan is also the co-owner of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders. Coming to his philanthropic activities, little is known but he has been involved in endeavours related to health care, relief funds, and children’s education — for which he was honoured with UNESCO’s Pyramide con Marni award in 2011.
