The Congress-led government has recommended Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar as Rajya Sabha’s nominated member, which comes as a belated birthday gift to the legend batsman from Maharashtra.
Sachin achieved a historic score of 100 international centuries in March. His name was recommended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday under Article 80 of the Constitution, which provides for nomination of eminent persons in the fields of literature, science, art and social service. President Pratibha Patil has approved the nomination later in the day.
On Wednesday, Sachin and his wife Anjali met Congress President Sonia Gandhi at her residence in New Delhi. Apart from Sachin, Hindi actress Ms Rekha and industrialist-cum-social activist Mrs Anu Aga have also been recommended. President can nominate 12 persons under the Article 80.
