Radhika, the mother of Rohith Vemula, a Dali research scholar of University of Hyderabad who committed suicide over the punishment by VC under pressure from HRD minister Smriti Irani and Labour minister Bhndaru Dattatreya, has been rushed to hospital on Sunday when she complained of chest pain.
Radhika was called by Smriti Irani to assuage her feelings and assuring her ex-gratia earlier but she refused to accept any money from the government. “I want to know why he (Rohith) died. Was he killed or did he die? Why was he suspended? Those responsible should be arrested and punished,” she told the TV channels.
Rohith, 26, committed suicide last Sunday after living 13 days in an ostracised outskirts of the university with four other scholars who were expelled from their college hostel and banned from student activities. The punishment was meted out to them after a leader of ABVP in the campus complained to BJP-led Union government about a scuffle over a poster and the HRD minister intervened following Dattatreya’s letter.
Though PM Narendra Modi tweeted that the mother’s pain is understandable, it failed to calm down the agitating students in the campus and the issue is spreading to other universities with 3 JNU scholars too starting indefeinite hunger strike today, Sunday Jan 24.
