Despite all odds, Aamir Khan-starrer ‘PK’ with Vidhu Vinod Chopra-Rajkumar Hirani showed the next generation of Hindi film makers how to make a film and make it successful.
With a record box office collection of more than $100 million or Rs.640 crore to be precise, the film remains an all-time grosser for the Hindi film industry in years to come. In a sense, ‘PK’ has raised the bar for rivals, especially the other two Khans in Bollywood — Salman Khan and Shahrukh Khan.
The film ‘PK’ stars besides Aamir Khan in the title role, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla, and Sanjay Dutt but the gripping story-line is the main cache in its success.
It tells the story of an alien who lands on Earth on a research mission, loses his star-diamond that is his communicator to his space ship. In his search for the device, he befriends a TV journalist and raises questions on religious dogmas and superstitions in the country.
In terms of box office collections, the film has crossed Rs.500 crore in India in two months, since its release on December 19, 2014 in 4,500 screeens and later expanded to 5,200 screens. The film has grossed Rs.487 crore in the domestic box office and Rs.163 crore in the overseas market. It has also become the first film in international box office hits reaching a position of 66th in top 100 films of the year worldwide.
Here’s a glance at how PK did in overseas compared to other major hits:
‘3 Idiots’ -Overseas Box Office – Rs 1,676,295,000
‘Dhoom: 3′ -–——————— Rs 1,736,483,550
‘PK’ ——————————-– Rs 1,633,020,300
‘Chennai Express’—————– Rs 1,127,017,310
‘Happy New Year’ —————– Rs 838,173,575.
In fact, Aamir Khan has overtaken his own past record. He crossed 2013 release ‘Dhoom 3’ by rs.100 crore margin with ‘PK’ and his ‘3 Idiots’ or ‘Ghajini’ which had set the target of mark of crossing Rs.100-crore mark for many other films in Bollywood.
Now that, the film ‘PK’ has set new record of not rupees and crores but millions of dollars at $100 million, according to Rentrak figure. It remains to be seen who will break the record.
