Indian hopes took another step ahead in the Cincinnati Open as Leander Paes and his Swiss partner Stanislas Wawrinka came back from a set down to win the opener of the tournament.

Producing a slow start got the better of the Indo-Swiss pair against their South African-French opponents, Kevin Anderson and Jeremy Chardy as they were whitewashed in the first set 1-6. However, Paes, former doubles World number 1 and ‘Stanimal’ (as Wawrinka is known to his fans), the current singles World number 5 turned the match around and made it to their favor, winning the second set 6-1 and the decider 10-6.
The unseeded Indo-Swiss pair will next face the eighth seeded Canadian-American partnership, Vasek Pospisil and James Sock.
This is only the second time Paes and Wawrinka have teamed up as a doubles team. In October 2014, they reached the quarter-finals of the ATP World Tour 1000 Master’s tournament.
Only last week, Leander Paes teamed up with World number 2 Andy Murray but crashed out in the second round to Andy’s elder brother, Jamie Murray and his Australian partner John Peers.
In last month’s Wimbledon, Paes won his eighth mixed doubles grand slam title with Martina Hingis while Wawrinka is the reigning French Open champion, which he won outlasting World number 1 Novak Djokovic in June of this year.
Wawrinka is Paes’s 102nd doubles partner
