The only known Muslim face of BJP and Vajpayee government, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, Union Minister of State for Minority Affairs and 19 others were convicted by a Rampur Court for violating prohibitory orders during the 2009 Lok Sabha election campaign. He was immediately arrested inside the court and granted bail.
The court sentenced him for one year jail term. Naqvi along with 19 other people was booked in Patwai police station in Rampur in 2009 for allegedly breaching prohibitory orders and barging in to the police station. He was charged under unlawful assembly under Section 144 of the IPC and Criminal Law Amendment Act.
Surprisingly, the case was delayed for long enough but it came up to take a dramatic end in the court when the minister and his followers were in the court and hundreds of supporters shouting outside in support of the minister.
Now that he was arrested, released but facing a criminal case means he may be asked to quit the union cabinet though it was entirely the PM’s prerogative to let him continue in the cabinet or not.
