Bolstered with its new acquisition of exclusive India rights for Cyanogen operating system in India, domestic smartphone maker Micromax has launched its new 4G device named Yureka with a price tag of Rs.8,999 and available for pre-registration on Amazon India.
All these Cyanogen phone series will be sold under the brand name ‘Yu’ on Amazon India, emulating the highly successful Xiaomi online flash sale on Flipkart. The Yureka will be available from January 19 at the Amazon India e-commerce website.
The Yureka, a dual SIM device, will be the first mobile phone with CyanogenMod that was tweaked from the original Android version with new features and options not available in other Android phones, except Oneplus One, which is currently halted from selling in India.
Launching the Yu brand phone Yureka, Micromax and Yu co-founder Rahul Sharma said the new brand will target the youth and gadget-savy techies in India. Based on Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octacore processor and 64-bit multi-core CPU, Yureka sports a 5.5-inch HD IPS display with a memory of 2GB RAM, 16GB ROM and an additional 12.5GB memory for apps and storage. Its storage can be extended up to 32 GB. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera for selfies and features a 2,500 mAh battery.
“Yu will allow users to root their devices, without voiding the warranty. This will allow users to run endless customisation on their device and offer an enhanced product experience, presently not being supported by any other brand in the country,” Sharma said.
Micromax is also planning to bring out new devices in the first quarter of 2015 to withstand the onslaught wreaked by an aggressive online sales model of Xiaomi in India, while it was able to stall the entry of OnePlus One with a court case for now.
Kirt McMaster, CEO of Cyanogen, was upbeat to launch their entry into India. He said, “It’s only the beginning as the partnership unfolds. Micromax + Cyanogen = revolution. Stay tuned for many awesome new innovations that will arise from this collaboration.”
Micromax is currently the largest Indian mobile vendor in the country with a market share of 16.6 percent in Q2 of 2014, according to Counterpoint Research.
The resarch firm IDC states that the smartphone market in India grew at 84 percent year-on-year in the quarter ended June 2014 to 18.42 million units from 10.02 million units Q2, 2013.
