The Twitter account operator for the world terrorist outfit Islamic State or ISIS was arrested by police on Saturday evening after UK-based Channel 4 traced him to IS tweets working as conduit to recruit British and the sub-continent youth.
Named Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the Bangalore-based man works for food-chain company and originally hails from West Bengal. His account @shamiwitnes was popular among the Muslim youth and its tweets attracted the youth to join the Jihad in Syria and Iraq.
“We picked up terror suspect Mehdi Masroor Biswas from his house in the early hours and took him into custody for interrogation,” Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) L.R. Pachuau told IANS.
A preliminary inquiry by police zeroed in on 24-year-old Biswas, who works as an executive at a prominent Indian corporate and stays in Bengaluru’s upscale southeast suburb. A probe team of the city’s special crime branch raided Biswas’ house and seized incriminating documents, Islamic literature and many pictures.
“Biswas, who hails from West Bengal, moved to Bengaluru after his transfer a couple of years ago. A case has been registered against him under the Information Technology Act,” Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Kumar said.
The police have declined to reveal the details but he is being interrogated currently to establish his links with the ISIS. Britain’s Channel 4 News earlier said, “His tweets, written under the name Shami Witness, were seen two million times each month, making him perhaps the most influential Islamic State Twitter account, with over 17,700 followers.”
While the channel merely named him Mehdi, Indian news reports gave out his full name and have thrown light on his other activities, which showed no extraordinary links and one of his Facebook messages even expressed concern on rape incidents in India.
It may be noted that earlier Kalyan-based youth Areeb Majeed, who had joined the IS and returned home, was arrested and it was learnt that the Twitter account @shamiwitnes came up during his confession too. The Twitter account @shamiwitnes has been cancelled ever since the channel 4 revealed the identity of Mehdi.
