As expected, Rani Mukherji’s first action film, “Mardaani” managed to pick up at the box office during the weekend after a slow start, earning ₹14.46 crore in the first weekend.

The film produced by Aditya Chopra and directed by Pradeep Sarkar collected just ₹3.46 crore on the opening day but pulled in more crowd in the weekend after receiving praises from film critics.

“Mardaani” earned ₹3.46 crore on the first day and went on to collect ₹4.75 crore on Saturday and ₹6.25 crore on Sunday, taking the total weekend collection to ₹14.46 crore, according to Bollywood Hungama.

The women-centric action drama, which also stars Tahir Bhasin and Jisshu Sengupta in the lead, was released in over 1300 screens on Friday, 22 August. It failed to create much pre-release hype despite the presence of Rani Mukherjee, who takes on child trafficking mafia with all earnest. The film revolves around the “Black” actress’ attempt to save a girl kidnapped by hardcore criminals.

Unfortunately, the film received an “A” certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification despite deleting some objectionable scenes, because of some gruesome plots. Pakistan Film Censor Board also gave the film an “A” certificate after the makers of the film refused to delete a few scenes as demanded by them, which means it won’t be released in the neighbouring country.

However, Rani Mukherjee received heaps of praises from film critics for her performance in the movie which deals with human trafficking.

Meanwhile, in what would make the makers of the film happy, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced on twitter that the film would be given tax free status in the state for its bold social message.

“After a very long time went along with family to watch a movie. ‘Mardaani’ turned out to be soul stirring saga highlighting a societal evil,” tweeted Chouhan.

“I congratulate Rani Mukherjee for a wonderful and powerful performance in ‘Mardaani’. Aditya Chopra has done well to produce this movie.”

“Trafficking of young girls and women is worst evil which needs to be eliminated.’Mardaani’ has brought it into focus.”

Meanwhile, “Singham Returns” which was released on 15 August, continues to rake in revenue even after one week. Bollywood Hungama reported that the action movie directed by Rohit Shetty and starring Ajay Devgan, Kareena Kapoor, Amole Gupte and Anupam Kher earned 32.09 crore on the first day and went on to collect ₹77.69 crore in the first weekend, and ₹112.59 crore in one week, taking the total collection, including the second weekend earning, to ₹127.8 crore.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh had earlier announced on his twitter page that the film had crossed ₹100 crore mark in just six days of run in the theatres.
