Manjhi- The Mountain Man is inspired by a true story based on Dashrath Manjhi (played by Nawazuddin Siddiqui), who single-handedly cut down a mountain to make way for his village in Bihar.
A tale of love, determination and revenge, unlike Shah Jahan’s love for Mumtaaz, is the modern day Dashrath, who was often scoffed at as ‘pagla’ (mad).
An unfortunate incident in which he lost his beloved wife makes him get so involved that he cuts down the mountain and makes way for his village so that no other person suffers the way he did.
While media reviews were strong and supportive to Director Ketan Mehta’s efforts to bring to life ‘Manjhi- The Mountain Man’ story as a must watch, Nawazuddin and Radhika Apte have done justice to their role in the film.
Here are some key reviews by other media outlets:
The Indian Express says Nawazuddin has played the role of mountain man brilliantly and he is consistent on the screen without making the movie sour. However, The Indian Express review said the actors Nawazuddin and Radhika Apte were made to be more ‘filmi’ than was necessary. The latter role of Nawaz as he ages is better channeled and they wish that he had given more of his talent here. The film was rated with 2 stars out of 5.
Zeenews has focused more on its technical production of the movie describing it as a treat to watch. It says the is well presented but unfortunately “you don’t get emotionally involved or the roots are too rural”. At the end the review said there is a feeling of something missing in the movie when you leave the theatre. They have rated 3.5 stars out of 5.
Clearly the headline says that the man behind the Manjhi, Nawazuddin is the real man. Terming ‘Manjhi – The Mountain Man’ as a must watch, the review praises the efforts to show what a single man is capable of doing, with Nawazuddin’s spell-bound acting. If you are thinking about watching it or not, here is an interesting quote of Dashrath from the film: “Pahar todne se mushkil hai kya?” They have rated 2.5 stars out of 5.
NDTV says movie had to fill many blanks. It is clear that Manjhi is missing something. They said, “In cinematic terms, the spectacle of a man engaged in an awe-inspiring but singularly drab pursuit can be repetitive. Not too infrequently, it is indeed monotonous. ”
“Manjhi – The Mountain Man” does have several moments that make it for compelling viewing. It is in trying to squeeze every ounce of drama out of the biographical material that the film gets somewhat frayed at the edges.” They have rated the film 3 stars out of 5.
Hindustan Times has said that with a powerful story and brilliant actors like Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Radhika Apte, this is one film you cannot miss. The most impressive and the pillar of the film is Nawazuddin, it said. However, the reviewer also says that some moments in the film will spoil your mood. They also feel that the movie is too filmy for a story which is very strong and rural. They have rated 4.5 stars out of 5, probably because of Nawazuddin.
