JNU Students Union leader Kanhaiya Kumar, who was barred from entering the campus of Hyderabad central University, on Wednesday reached the campus and the Telangana police decided not to stop him from entering the campus at the last minute, but the University administration stopped him at the gate.
JNU students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar turned the venue into an address and asked the central government not to turn university campuses into jails and raised slogans for justice to Rohith Vemula and respect to the Constitution of India.
He arrived at the invitation of agitating Dalit students against the VC for the suicide of Rohith Vemula. The Joint Action Committee for Social Justice is seeking VC’s resignation for abetting the suicide of Dalit research scholar Rohith Vemula. Hyderabad University VC Appa Rao Podile, who was on 2-month leave, abruptly returned on Monday and resumed office apparently not waiting for the probing committee report on Vemula suicide.
AWARD Goes to Vemula, Kanhaiya
The Irom Sharmila Scholarship instituted by a Delhi professor has gone to Rohit Vemula (posthumously) of Hyderabad Central University and Kanhaiya Kumar of Jawaharlal Nehru University and the amount Rs.60,000 will be shared by both. The announcement was made at a seminar in Delhi School of Economics.
The award was instituted in 2012 by Delhi University professor Nandini Sundar to recognise those in financial need, shown academic merit, contributed to society and suffering as a result of armed conflict. The scholarship carries a cash prize of Rs 50,000 (Rs 60,000 if shared).
This year’s award was given to Vemula and Kanhaiya as student representatives seeking true constitutional democracy by upholding the constitutional ideals of fraternity, equality, right to life, and inspiring many others across the country.
Vemula committed suicide against the state policies against Dalit students, while Kanhaiya was slapped sedition charges by Delhi Police and the ruling BJP has come under severe criticism over its anti-student politics and policies.[tags, kanhaiya kumar, hcu visit, rohith vemula, suicide, student politics, student unrest, irom sharmila award 2016, prize, delhi university, ]
