Since it was the elections time, what happened in Kolkata following the collapse of flyover under construction in a busy area should not surprise onlookers as the impending elections speak volumes for pushing such projects under tight deadlines irrespecitve of the quality.
Quality given a go by, even huge structures will come down within days if not months as was the case earlier. The blame game will be feverish since elections are underway in the state but neither the civil bodies nor the government functionaries can be taken for task as the elections code will come into force soon.
On his part, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Chief Minister of West Bengal, Ms. Mamata Banerjee on the situation and expressed grief on the mishap in Kolkata and assured all possible support from the Center. “Shocked and saddened by collapse of under construction flyover in Kolkata. Took stock of the situation and rescue operations. My thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives in Kolkata. May the injured recover at the earliest”, the Prime Minister said in his typical message.
President Pranab Mukherjee, who is from West Bengal too sent his codolences for the loss of lives due to the collapse of a flyover under construction in Kolkata. He said “I am sad to learn about the collapse of the flyover under construction in Kolkata in which number of persons have lost their lives and many others are injured. I understand rescue and relief operations are currently underway.”
It is not West Bengal alone but all over the country, poor construction materials and corruption have made a dent that it hardly remains in the thoughts of our ruling parties for long. Few days later, Kolkata tragedy will be taken over by another bigger tragedy and all media attention moves there. The root cause remains the same for ever.[tags, kolkaya flyover, tragedy, root cause, reactions, pm modi, president, mamta banerjee,]
