The 20th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) opened in Kolkata on Monday with celebrities and politicians sharing the stage at the Netaji Indoor Stadium with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan and badshsha Shah Rukh Khan.

Wearing uttariyas gifted by Banerjee, the Bachchan family of Big B, his wife and veteran actress Jaya, son Abhishek and actress-daughter-in-law Aishwarya, besides SRK stole the show, while artists performed on their instruments with singer Usha Uthup setting the tune for the magical evening.

Other celebrities included filmmakers Amol Palekar, Shoojit Sircar and a host of Bengali film actors Raima Sen, Tanuja, among others. Tanuja had to be shifted to a hospital after she complained of breathlessness.

Jaya Bachchan said that it “has become a family event for us,” while Aishwarya thanked Mamata Banerji in broken Bengali on the stage:”Amader poribarer proti apnader ashirvad bhlaobashar jonyo onek onek dhonyobaad (thank you for the love and affection that you have showered on our family).”

Award-winning Australian filmmaker Paul Cox said, “I thought I was in a soccer field,” remarking at the size and scale of the event. “When you see a film on the big screen you realise the true power of the cinema,” he noted.

Cox is part of the jury to decide the winner of KIFF competition on the best international woman director.

SRK, as promised last year, spoke in Bengali saying the event gets “bigger, better, flamboyant and more vibrant” as every year passes by.

Kolkata film festival will screen a rich collection of 137 films from 60 countries, in 15 segments. It includes 31 Indian films and 13 Bengali films and run till November 17.
