Kaththi, The Tamil film released on Wednesday, starring Vijay in a dual role alogside Samantha Ruth Prabhu, directed by ace director AR Murugadoss opened with more than 90% occupancy, on its way to create box office hit. The film resembles Allu Arjun’s “Julayi” though the main plot and sequence of events is different.
The movie reviews on its opening day were quite positive and OnlyKollywood gave the film 3.5 out of 5 stars, while Moviecrow gave it 3.75 out of 5 with a remark that the movie is as sharp as its tile, which means knife in English. With his previous film “Thuppaki” seeing huge success, “Kaththi” is bound to create another box office record.
The storyline is about an international gangster Vivek (Tota Roy Chowdhury) who was religiously shadowed by the police, who finally decide to enlist the support of another criminal mastermind Kathiresan (Vijay) to help chase the gangster. After a cat and mouse chase, Vivek was injured and taken into custory. Vivek swears to take revenge against Kathiresan but he finds it surprising that both their mindsets are similar and their thinking pattern is also equally criminal.
Here some movie reviews on “Kaththi” in major newspapers:
“If nothing else, it must be said that his (Murugadoss) films have some of the smarter masala heroes. There’s at least an attempt to think through a situation instead of just flexing a bicep…A scene in which farmers commit suicide is chilling, but a minute later, we question the validity of our response.” Fighting MNCs out to grab villagers’ land, the hero invokes the names of Periyar, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi and launches a civil disobedience movement, tilting the story heavily into our daily life, goes the reveiw in the Hindu. “What a grand idea. And what a grand masala movie might have resulted had these concerns percolated into the story at every level, had this film been as attuned to serving its premise as its hero and his fans,” writes the reviewer.
Bollywoodlife.com: “A treat for all Vijay fans!” — Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Stars
“If you are a Vijay fan then you’ll obviously love this film! But even if you are not, watch this film because it is one of the best films in Vijay’s career. He has done plenty of inane masala films and deserves a pat on the back for experimenting with Kaththi. This is perhaps the first time he has done a film with a strong social message relevant to India today. And A R Murugadoss must be applauded for getting the actor into this new zone.”
Indiaglitz.com: “A very sharp commercial entertainer” – Rating : 3.25 / 5
Murugadoss has made perfect use of Vijay’s potential and gave a hi-fi drama to please his fans with a powerful social message that takes too many twists but never bores the viewer. However, it has pointed out some logical errors in the first few minutes. “If, Kathiresan can simply decode anything, why was he keep getting caught for 18 times when he tried to escape from the jail? Well, it is okay to play to the gallery, and cross the barricades of logics for a commercial entertainer. But the question is, how long will we have to say OKAY to these age old strategies?” Finally, the verdict from the Indiaglitz is that both Vijay & Murugados have redefined the term ‘commercial’ once again and “delivered a perfect Diwali treat for the Tamil audience.”
Desimartini: Kaththi Review – by Kumaresan Prabhakaran Rating: 4 out of 5 stars.
“Samantha as Ankitha, did a decent job along with Sathish as Ravi. Neil Nitin Mukesh, perfectly suits into his role of a corporate head and did an excellent job to establish himself into the handsome looking badies list… Anirudh’s BGM songs are already a chartbuster hit and they were well choreographed with stunning dance steps from Vijay. George C William’s camera work is brilliant for an mass entertainer and he lifts himself to the bigger league. Overall, Kaththi is definitely watchable for good social awareness message on Farmers. A R Murugadoss continued from where he left in Ramanaa. Good try..!!!”
