Vijay-starrer Tamil film “Kaththi” reportedly collected Rs.86 lakhs from 76 screens which have reported so far in Tamil Nadu, while in Karnataka, Rs.2 crore was reported from the 102 screens it was released in. The opening day box office collections reports are still hazy and unconfirmed reports hint at Rs.10 crore.
Directed by AR Murugadoss and produced by Lyca Productions, “Kaththi” features Samantha Ruth Prabhu as female lead, besides Neil Nitin Mukesh and Tota Roy Chowdhury. The film is expected to beat Vijay’s career best film “Jilla”.
The film was released in 3,500 screens worldwide, one of the biggest non-Rajinikanth film to be released in so many theatres. With an occupancy rate of over 90 percent in all theatres and multiplexes, the film is likely to cross the records set by Rajinikanth or Kamal Haasan films so far.
It is expected that the film will cross Vijay’s previous record of “Thuppakki” that grossed $364,000 in the USA. In terms of overseas market, top five Tamil films so far are:
Endhiran, Vishwaroopam, Sivaji, Dasavatharam and Kochadaiyyan.
If “Kaththi” gets more than $400,000 on its opening day, then it is likely to join Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan club.
Meanwhile, the other Tamil film Vishal’s “Poojai” is picking up slowly according to reports, though it was nowhere near the gross box office figures of “Kaththi”.
