Chennai lost to Kings XI Punjab by six wickets on Friday despite making 205 runs which were chased with equal determination by the Punjabis with seven balls to spare. Though Brendon McCullum and Dwayne Smith set up the match in favour of their team, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller blew away the CSK bowlers to guide KXIP to a convincing six-wicket victory.

Delhi, did similar feat against Kolkata Knight Riders on Saturday after losing badly in the opening against Royal Challengers Bangalore. With teams, more or less even on the scoreboard, today’s match will push one of them to the next stage.

Delhi Daredevils, with stand-in skipper Dinesh Karthik set up his team’s run-chase, before JP Duminy played the role of finisher to perfection, picking the one bowler and identifying the one over that would seal the match decisively in favour of his team.

Kevin Pietersen – the regular skipper of the Delhi Daredevils – with his finger injury bonafide on Instagram is unlikely to resume his play.

Otherwise, Smith and McCullum added 123 runs for the opening wicket to set up the game for CSK in their previous match. Given the way they went about their matching each other with stroke for stroke, they will be expected to come to the match today with same strategy. Suresh Raina, a permanent fature on CSK matches and its leading run-getter in the league – will be the fulcrum of CSK’s batting plans.

With runs in both matches, JP Duminy is Delhi Daredevils’ man in form. The southpaw scored 67 against RCB and followed it up with a match-winning 52 against KKR – remaining unbeaten on both the occasions. He, along with Dinesh Karthik, Ross Taylor and Kevin Pietersen (if he makes the playing XI), will be the mainstays of DD’s batting plans.

Previous Matches:

Chennai Super Kings v Kings XI Punjab: Skipper MS Dhoni and coach Stephen Fleming will have to ask their fielders not to put down catches, and certainly not those of destructive players like Virender Sehwag, Glenn Maxwell and David Miller. CSK will also know they need to tighten the screws on the bowling front as they conceded as many as 26 fours and five sixes in their last match.

Delhi Daredevils v Kolkata Knight Riders: KKR managed to score 81 runs in the middle period of the innings in their match against Delhi Daredevils. Jimmy Neesham has conceded 48 runs in four overs despite bowling in the middle stages of the innings that he needs to be careful in this match.

Previous Meetings

CSK will have a clear edge against the Delhi Daredevils. The two-time IPL champions CSK have won 8 of the 12 matches against DD in the previous meetings and some of them include the memorable centuries by CSK’s Murali Vijay (2012) and AB de Villiers (2009).

MS Dhoni is the only player in the world to captain in more than 100 T20 matches; he has so far been a skipper in 164 games. The next best is Adam Gilchrist, who led in 83 T20 matches.

Prediction: CSK should win if DD does not throw up surprises as they did last week.
