One would have expected Mumbai to give a tough fight to defending champions KKR in the opening match of the IPL, but that was not to be as the men in blue suffered a rather humiliating defeat at the hands of Gambhir and company. Despite the batting coming good, the bowling lacked depth and they were pummeled to all parts of the ground. Poor fielding too added to their misery as dropped catches and missed run outs cost them dearly trying to defend a modest total. Mumbai are known to be a side that regularly bounce back to get things sorted out and what better chance than a home fixture to prove their mettle?

Punjab were clearly outplayed by a classy Rajasthan Royals side. The game certainly remained one sided for Bailey and company despite some good swing bowling right at the top of the order. They must look to use this to their advantage as Mumbai lack depth in batting barring a firm top order. If Sharma, Finch and Anderson succumb early, the likes of Axar and Karanveer will choke the rest of the batsmen out. And, if Maxwell and company come to the party, then Preity Zinta will have a million reasons to smile. The likes of Sandeep and Anureet displayed how effective they are with the new ball and Mumbai must be wary of this.

X Factor – Harbhajan Singh and Pragyan Ojha pretty much had the worst spell of their lives as they were carted to all areas against KKR. Sharma did not know who else to go to and eventually lost the plot. If Punjab target Mumbai’s spin twins, then the game will sit pretty for Bailey and his boys.

Another factor that needs to be considered is the ‘big show’ Glen Maxwell’s form. His unpredictability at the crease has decided the fate of many teams in the IPL’s history. If he gets going, then no total seems to big to chase down. Hence, if Mumbai get him early, then even a score of 150+ will look daunting.
