Kings XI Punjab, despite their unprecedented run rate of 0.04 in almost every match, have to go for an all-out match or do-or-die match today against the CSK, who had stunned the opponents throughout the season and are now proven all-out attackers in any match from the start.
Punjab Openers Manan Vohra and Virender Sehwag have excelled in the art of going after every ball and startling the bowlers from the word go, while Glenn Maxwell has inflicted scars on bowlers like no other batsman. David Miller and George Bailey are the two other batsmen who will play key roles in the middle order. On the bowling front, the KXIP’s attack was mainly handled by Sandeep Sharma and Mitchell Johnson but they need to buck up a little on Friday to win the match.
Unlike KXIP, there’ll be a little more calmness in CSK’s strategies. After Dwayne Smith’s success at the top of the innings right through the season, he has become a key player in the team worth to watch. The other feature that remained constant through CSK’s success has been runs from Suresh Raina; who has, for the seventh season running, accumulated in excess of 400 runs.
Both captains, and bowling departments need to watched carefully today. CSK’s spinners – R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja – will play a huge role, while KXIP will rely on Sandeep Sharma and Mitchell Johnson to bring toughness in the game.
Kings XI Punjab and Chennai Super Kings have played 14 matches so far and Punjab won 8, while CSK won 6.
KXIP has defeated CSK on two occasions this season and Glenn Maxwell took the CSK bowlers fret on both occasions.
In the first meeting, in Abu Dhabi, Maxwell scored 95 from 43 balls and powered KXIP’s chase of 206 and in the second match played in Cuttack, Maxwell starred with the bat yet again, scoring 90 from 38 balls and setting the foundation for his team’s 231/4. In reply, CSK only managed 187/6, finishing 45 runs short.
No team that has topped the table at the end of the league stage has gone on to win the IPL title since the Rajasthan Royals did it in the inaugural season, in 2008.
The average first-innings total in the last 13 IPL matches played at Wankhede Stadium is 176.
Chennai Super Kings have lost the fewest wickets among all the eight teams this season – 63.
Kings XI Punjab have the most successful bowling attack this season; they’ve picked up more wickets than any other team – 99.
The winner of this match will progress to the title clash against the Kolkata Knight Riders (scheduled for June 1 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru). For the losers, it will be the end of the road where Pepsi IPL 2014 is concerned.
Chennai Super Kings may win the match as their form is formidable and the Punjab team may be feeling the pressure.
