India Blocks 857 Porn Websites; Clamour for Personal Liberty in Focus

Internet users in India were outraged as the news spread that multiple pornographic websites have been blocked by the government unilaterally without any debate or discussion.

Telecom operators and internet service providers (ISPs) have reportedly been asked by the government of India to block 857 pornographic websites after the Supreme Court declined to pass an interim order to ban pornography websites per se in the country.

Last month, Chief Justice of India HL Dattu stood up for personal liberty, saying the court could not intervene on private porn viewers. How can they stop an adult watching it within the four walls of a room? It is a violation of Article 21(right to personal liberty) of the Constitution, he observed.

No Official statement from government regarding ban on porn has been made yet. Otherwise, data revealed by some websites show that India has one of the largest number of porn viewers with 14.2 billion visits recorded. In fact, Canadian-Indian actress Sunny Leone is the most searched porn star in the country.

However, Social media was outraged with the government’s decision to block porn. Many celebrities have tweeted their feelings against the porn ban and a lot of people cracked joke on the government.

Here is a list of tweets by celebrities and some on funny side of the issue:
