Amid growing scare of swine flu in the city of Hyderabad, one item that is moving fastest in Unani medical stores is the Zinda Talismath, a time-tested remedy for curing cold and pulminory diseases.
Zinda Talismath, meaning a ‘living magic’ is an over-the-counter drug that is popular in Telangana for over a century as a “har Marz ki Dawa” or cure for all ailments.
Available in multiforms as toothpaste, liquid, or balm, it is considered a quick-fix remedy for toothache, cold, cough, body pain, nausea, and vomiting. Essentially, it is a herbal medicine of eucalyptus oil to cure flu and with symptoms of swine flu being the same, poeple are flocking to it every day as the swine flu scare spread with over tens of cases reported daily.
The toothpaste is priced Rs.80, within the reach of common man, while balm and liquid is also not more than Rs.100 depending on the volume.
However, the manufacturers differ that it could cure swine-flu. “We do not claim it offers a cure for swine flu. But it definitely is effective in treating its symptoms,” says Masihuddin Faroouqi, managing partner of Zinda Tilismath.
The main ingredient of Zinda Tilismath is eucalyptus oil whose efficacy in treating swine flu and bird flu symptoms was tested by a Pune lab in 2004 and it has many backers, including the former Chief Minister, late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, who himself was an alloapathic doctor.
Besides eucalyptus oil, Zinda Talismath uses camphor, menthol, Thymol and Ratanjyoth, the bark of a tree. “All the ingredients have good medicinal properties in curing common ailments,” says Mr. Faroouqi whose father, Hakim Mohammed Moizuddin Farooqui, founded the Zinda Tilismath Karkhana in 1920.
The founder had learnt the medicinal value from the Siddis, who were part of the African Cavalry Guard of the Nizam. The Zinda Talismath is available in 5 ml and 15 ml vials too and sells more than 10 million bottles a year.
“Our product goes all over the world and its stronghold remains the erstwhile Hyderabad state comprising parts of A.P, Karnataka and Maharashtra”, says Mr. Farooqui.
