Following the Central Board of Secondary Education’s decision to insert the history of India’s north-east region in its textbooks, the University Grant Commission (UGC) too has advised the universities to incorporate the following topics in the university curriculum:
Among the suggestions mad e by the uGC include novels and short stories from the North East, which will get into literature and especially English textbooks. In addition, history of North East including personalities who participated in anti-colonial uprisings as well as freedom movement will be mentioned in history subjects now.
Gong beyond the textbook knwoledge, UGC said students from the other parts of the country will spend some time in the North East so as to understand and appreciate culture of the area. Besides, regular cultural exchange between institutions in the North East and other areas will be built in higher education system in the universities, it said.
The North East Zone Cultural Centre, an autonomous body of the Ministry of Culture will now organize various programmes under its new scheme — National Cultural Exchange Programme (NCEP) — for awareness about the culture of the North Eastern Region, said UGC in a statement.
Content about various aspects of the North Eastern Region have already been included in the textbooks of Social Sciences such as History, Geography and Political Science published by National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) viz History classes-VII,IX,X and XII, Geography classes: VI to XII, Political Science classes: VI,VIII to XII.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani gave the information in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
