Despite media hype, Harbhajan Singh and Gautam Gambhir were dropped from the squad selected today to play for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy in England from June 1 to 18, 2017.
The Virat Kohli-led Indian team will start the campaign palaying against Pakistan at Edgbaston on Wednesday, June 4, 2017. here is the full team announced by BCCI on Monday:
Squad: Virat Kohli (c), Rohit, Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan, Yuvraj Singh, Ajinkya Rahane, Manish Pandey, Kedar Jadhav, MS Dhoni, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, R Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah, Umesh Yadav, Mohammad Shami
Manish Pandey and Rohit Sharma return as opening batsmen or the first order plaers and their performance in IPL could be the motive behind their selection. Ravichandran Ashwin, the ace offspinner, who had undergone surgery recently and Ravindra Jadeja will be the spinners.
Ashwin, who made India reach semis in the Champions Trophy in 2013, was the obvious choice this time too and MSK Prasad, the chairman of the selection panel said, “Ashwin’s selection was not a difficult decision. He’s had rest, isn’t out of form. We’ve been preparing him for the Champions Trophy.”
Despite all odds against Ajinkya Rahane, he was retained by the the MSK Prasad-led selection panel, while Rishabh Pant was given a go-by this time. Bhuvneshwar is the leading wicket-taker in the IPL.
