‘Happy New Year’ Day One Box Office Collections Cross Rs.44.9 Cr, To Create History with Rs.200 Cr by Weekend

The much-awaited Shahrukh Khan Diwali gift “Happy New Year” under his Red Chillies banner has made history collecting Rs. 44.9 crore on its first day, redeeming SRK desire to join the Rs. 500 crore club, not merely aim at Rs.100 crore as many in Bollywood aspire.

According to Koimoi, HNY has collected Rs 42.62 cr in Hindi, 1.43 crore in its Telugu version and 0.92 crore in its Tamil version, while overseas collections are still awaited.

Directed by Farah Khan, “Happy New Year” cast includes Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani. The film revolves around the story of five men and one woman who attempt to pull off the biggest ever diamond heist, disguised as dancers.

Released in more than 4,000 screens worldwide, the film has made headlines with its advance booking almost full on the first day, making it a benchmark for any Bollywood film to aim at on its opening day. It has beaten Aamir Khan’s “Dhoom 3” record of Rs. 32 crore nett easily and set a new challenge to the upcoming film “PK” now.

The northern circuits are reporting huge turnout despite the high price being charged by multiplexes in Mumbai, Jaipur and Bangalore, Delhi and UP belt is estimated to touch Rs. 7 crore nett, while Mumbai may mint around Rs. 14 crore nett. In Bangalore itself, the first day box office was at Rs.2 crore, beating the occupancy for all the Kannada films on show now.

The film’s opening day box office figures are almost Rs.13 crore more than the record Rs.32.09 crore set by Ajay Devgn’s film “Singham Returns” and way above Hrithik Roshan’s film “Bang Bang” that was able to make Rs.27.54 crore, as per the figures estimated by Bollywood Hungama. The film has also set a new challenge to Salman Khan, whose films netted merely in the range of Rs. 17 to 26 crore range in 2014.
