Google Launches Android One Online as Entry-Level High Value Hindi Segment Priced Rs. 6,000 to 6,999

Whether or not leaks, Snapdeal has gone ahead on time with its announcement of the Karbonn Android One smartphone, called the Karbonn Sparkle V on its retailer site for Rs. 6,399, Rs.400 more than it was expected.

In all three manufacturers have been roped in by Google for the launch of Android One in India — Micromax, Spice and Karbonn naming the device MicroMax Canvas A1, Spice Dream Uno and Karbonn Sparkle V with price tags not exceeding Rs 7,000. All of them help support local languages, especially Hindi with 40% mobile market potential.

Snapdeal.com said it has strategically collaborated with Karbonn to launch their latest smartphone-Karbonn SPARKLE V which runs on Android 1 with specs such as Android 1 Operating System, 5 MP Primary Camera, 4.5 inch display (845 x 480 pixels), with variety of applications and features pre-loaded in the phone.

"With this new launch- Snapdeal.com enters in to the Android One segment," said a statement by Snapdeal. The phone will automatically update the latest version of Android soon after it is released. Tony Navin, Senior Vice President- Electronics & Home at Snapdeal.com, said, “With this launch we will enter the Android 1 category for the first time and we are sure that our consumers will be thrilled with this new launch."

Shashin Devsare, Executive Director of Karbonn, said: “Recognizing the potential of mobile phone technology in empowering the masses, Karbonn has been focused towards bringing cutting–edge mobile phone devices packed with innovative features to the consumers."

The launch of Android One powered Sparkle V in collaboration with Google is aimed at instant software upgrades, fast and responsive interface and pre-embedded popular apps in line with the needs of the consumers of emerging markets like India, he said. The phone comes in 3 coolours and a bold google designed interface making it an intuitive experience for the user, it said.

All the three Indian partners of Google have adhered to the minimum requirements set by Google — a 4.5-inch display (845 x 480 pixels), dual SIM support and run a stock version of Android 4.4, a quad core Mediatek processor, 1GB RAM, 4GB storage, microSD card for expansion (up to 32GB supported) and dual cameras.

Google has also experimented e-commerce retailer and the manufacturer tie-up for the first time on Snapdeal, Flipkart and Amazon India. Network operators are offering special data packages for Android One users as Airtel offered its A1 users to download Android software updates over 3G as well as 200MB worth of apps per month for six months at no cost. The phones will be sold online at 3:30 pm onwards today, September 15.

Google, on its part, is promoting its Android One with Wi-Fi-equipped mobile trucks called ‘Showroom on Wheels’ in 600 locations in 20 cities to show first hand how to use the Android One phone. In addition, it has appointed 30,000 Android One ambassadors just to do the word-of-mouth campaign for the phones.

In its next step, Google will launch Google Play News Stand in India with 30 exclusively-signed Indian publications on board.

Sundar Pichai, the Google head of the Chrome and Android divisions said, Google will not pump in any money for marketing or to support other advertisement efforts to market the phone, which will be available from the brands such as Acer, Alcatel, Asus, HTC, Intex, Lava, Panasonic, Lenovo, Xolo and Qualcomm in its next phase.
