Following a tremendous response to its ‘Big Billion Day Sale’ last year on October 6 that crashed the website, Flipkart is preparing for the repeat of the online sale again for a week this year starting from October 13 but on app-based mobile phones only.
The week-long ‘Big Billion Sale’ will begin on October 13 and end on October 17, unlike last time when it was confined to just one day. In fact, the Flipkart website crashed briefly under pressure when the rush of consumers brought the e-retailer to technical snags though more than 10,000 staff were working online on the day. The company came back to life but by then all the top deals of the day were sold out.
Many users who had selected items and added successfully to their cart were later faced with the message, “Sorry, the item went out of stock”. The chaos and criticism made Flipkart to shy away from such sales bonanza for the rest of the year.
However, this year’s event will be for a week and is confined to handheld-devices using its online app only. Nearly 70 product categories will be listed this year, including its recently acquired Myantra products. It said new fulfillment centers have been opened across the country to guarantee efficient delivery this time.
Flipkart said: “Celebrating the start of festive season in India, Big Billion Days will be the ultimate shopping event for customers to shop for gifts and other items for friends and family.”
Mukesh Bansal, Head of Commerce Platform, Flipkart & Chairman of Myntra has assured no technological failure this year. “We have also ramped up our technology and supply chain support to ensure all our 50 million customers have the best ever mobile shopping experience,” he said to ward off fears among online shoppers.
Bansal said as India shops the most during this time of the year, with more than 75% of its traffic coming via mobile, “we expect this app only sale to be the biggest shopping event of the year. Bigger and better as compared to last year, we have worked towards ensuring a seamless shopping experience for our customers.”
