FIFA 2014 World Cup : Messi, Rooney, Torres – Threesome who will have a point to prove in Brazil

The world cup has always been a breeding ground for champions. It provides every player an opportunity to perform on the biggest stage of them all and get their nation to glory. Footballers all around the world put years of hard work to make the final cut into their respective nations and prove their worth to the millions watching. Amongst those who have already made it to this level, let us take a look at some stars who have come in for some harsh criticism in the recent past and will look to prove a point in Brazil.

Lionel Messi – Call him the world’s greatest footballer, call him Barcelona’a leading goal scorer, call him anything you want, butLionel Mess Messi’s exploits with the national side have been far from convincing. The little magician has received much flak from fans and critics alike for failing to perform for the Argentinian team on multiple occasions. He is captaining the side at the moment and must look to add some goals to his national tally if at all he wants to disprove his critics. With the odds on Argentina to make it to the last four, Messi has to bring his ‘A’ game to the pitch if at all they stand a chance.

Wayne Rooney – Rooney is perhaps an automatic qualification amongst the English ranks. However, just like a lot of critics, his former teammate Paul Scholes also thinks otherwise. The Manchester United striker has received much flak for a string of poor performances in England colour and he will look to set the record straight in brazil. Remarkably, Rooney is one among the top stars to not have scored a goal in the world cup. Besides this, His club form last season has also been poor owing many to question hWayne Rooneyis presence in the side. England boss Hodgson however seems to have put faith in the striker and it is time for Rooney to repay the dividends.

Torres– Chelsea striker Fernando Torres was a surprise inclusion in the Spanish squad for the world cup. The striker himself like most others was surprised after his call up. Torres has failed to establish himself in the Chelsea ranks and has hardly started a handful of games last season. His goal tally seems far less impressive when compared to that of his peers in Negredo and Soldado, who were surprisingly not picked. Del Bosque however seems to have a liking for the former Athletico man and has entrusted him to toe the line in Brazil. With the impressive Villa and Costa in their ranks, Torres may hardly get any game time. But, he has to look to make the most of what is available and perform in Brazil.Fernando Torres
