Four years have flown by in a jiffy and nations are set to collide once again in a battle for the ultimate cricketing honor, the prestigious ICC Cricket ‘World Cup’.
The stakes are much higher this time for the nation that finishes on top of the pile and every side will look to feature their best X1in the conquest for glory. Let us have a look at some of the favorites to bag the cup heading into the tournament down under.
Australia – The Kangaroos are the ultimate favorites heading into the tournament. Playing most of their fixtures in their own backyard, the Australian outfit has the perfect blend of players when compared to any other side. They are currently ranked #1 in the ODI team rankings and are on the back of an undefeated summer including a recent tri series win. They look tougher than ever and can do better than what Ponting and side managed in the last sub continent edition.
India – Despite having a horrible summer outing, India still holds the aces heading into the tournament. They registered themselves as a dominant side once again after their landmark win in the 2011 edition and hence the pressure on them to perform will be notch higher. They boast of one of the finest batting units in the tournament and will pose a threat to any kind of attack given the leeway. The defending Champions will have a point to prove come the 14th of February and they will be more than happy to deliver.
South Africa – The Proteas have the best squad when compared to any other nation by a long mile. With proven match winners occupying key positions, De Villiers and company are presented an ideal opportunity to shed the ‘chokers’ tag. The surface and conditions will best suit the South African outfit and they are perhaps ‘the side’ to beat this year. Their form in the last year or so has been staggering and they will look to emulate the same.
New Zealand – Co hosts of this year’s tournament, the Black caps are presented with an ideal opportunity to prove the critics wrong in front of a fanatic home support and they look to be more than up to the challenge. This is New Zealand’s best ever world cup squad and the current form of the entire team make them unquestionable favorites. Watch out for Kane Williamson in specific for he is in the form of his life.
