Delhi High Court Raps ‘unrecognized’ IIPM, Asks Not to Use MBA, BBM for its Management Courses

srk-iipmIn a rare gesture of disapproval, Delhi High Court ordered Bangalore-based Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM) of Arindam Chaudhuri not to use terms such as MBA, BBA or any such tag for the courses it offers as it has not been recognised by any statutory body, leaving alone calling itself a management school, business school or B-school.

The court has also asked the IIPM to prominently display on its website that it is not recognized by any statutory body or authority in India, to which Chaudhuri said he would move the Supreme Court. The Delhi High Court also brushed aside IIPM version that the degree was offered by a foreign university called IMI in Belgium as “another face of IIPM.”

Chaudhuri insisted that IIMP never claimed to have offered MBA or BBA courses. “We have already told the court that we don’t want to call ourselves an institute providing management courses. We teach planning and entrepreneurship,” Chaudhuri told the media in Delhi. “We will challenge the order before higher court,” he said.

The HC took the decision on a PIL over IIPM for “misleading, cheating and exploiting students” by fraudulently using “MBA or BBA” in prospectus and official website as courses offered by it. Any institute offering MBA or management course should get approval from the AICTE and IIPM has not obtained any such approval and its still figures on AICTE list of unapproved institutions.

In November 2013, even the UGC had asked IIPM not to issue misleading advertisements in media. It had offered courses on its campuses based in IIPM Delhi, Bangalore, Jaipur, Lucknow and Noida, among others. Even Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan was once the host of its quiz program and he was reportedly offered huge remuneration. The fee ranged from Rs.13.25 lakhs to Rs.5.5 lakhs for several courses, which is way high than any recognized university or institute offers.
