Shashi Tharoor has been removed from the post of party spokesperson by the Congress Party High Command on the recommendation of the AICC disciplinary committee on Monday.
The party general secretary organisation Janardan Dwivedi said in a press release, “Congress President Sonia Gandhi has accepted the recommendation of the AICC disciplinary committee to remove Shashi Tharoor from the list of spokespersons of the AICC with immediate effect.”
Tharoor was trapped in a controversy for supporting and “praising” Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Kerala Congress leaders had filed a complaint regarding Tharoor’s support to Modi, demanding to take action against the act, a week ago. The leaders had said that Tharoor has hurt party workers by his “constant adulation” of PM Modi. Dwivedi said, “The Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee had submitted a complaint in this regard to the disciplinary committee.”
According to reports, the matter was taken up by the three-member disciplinary action committee of AICC, comprising leaders Motilal Vora, A K Antony and Sushilkumar Shinde before the Congress president Sonia Gandhi decided to remove Tharoor from the post.
Modi had invited Tharoor to participate in Swachh Bharat (Clean India) campaign and Tharoor had accepted it. This was also a topic for discussion among the party and led to controversy. Tharoor had been warned to stop praising Modi by Kerala Congress leaders and had told that he may face disciplinary actions.
Kerala Congress Chief VM Sudheeran had said, “Tharoor has praised Modi on several occasions. This has hurt the sentiments of the Congress and UDF workers who have put up hard work for Tharoor’s victory in the Lok Sabha polls.”
According to reports, while reacting to the action taken against Tharoor, Kerala Congress said, “We welcome the move. We had requested the High Command to take action.”
However, regarding the matter, Tharoor said, “As a loyal worker I accept the decision of the party president.”
Though there were allegations that Tharoor was supporting Modi and moving closer to BJP, Tharoor had replied that he is a “proud Congressman” and never endorsed the “Hindutva agenda” of the BJP.
Meanwhile, Party General Secretary Digvijay Singh had stated that he did not see anything wrong in Shashi Tharoor’s action. He had tweeted, “I see nothing wrong in Shashi Tharoor accepting to be Brand Ambassador for Swachhta Abhiyan. It is Congress Party programme adopted by Modi.”
