As expected the Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Monday rejected the offer of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to resign over the party’s worst-ever performance in the Lok Sabha elections and said it was not the solution.
“Resignation of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi is no solution to the problems faced by the Congress,” outgoing Prime Minister Manmohan Singh told the meeting and the CWC passed a resolution expressing full trust in the leadership of Sonia and her son Rahul.
“We will fight under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi,” said party spokesperson Raj Babbar, while Punjab Congress leader Amarinder Singh said, “Future course of action will be decided by the party president and vice-president.”
Party leader Oscar Fernandes said,”There is no question of retreating.” Another Senior Congress leader Beni Prasad Verma summed it up saying:”Why should they resign. It is a collective responsibility of the party.”
In private, however, many Congress leaders are upset with coterie around Rahul Gandhi, which they blame for the debacle, especially general secretaries Madhusudan Mistry, CP Joshi, Ajay Maken, Mukul Wasnik, Mohan Prakash, Shakeel Ahmed, Gurudas Kamat, BK Hariprasad, Ambika Soni and Digvijaya Singh.
Otherwise, Rahul had pitched for “structural changes” in the party that would pave the way for the young leaders to take over the reins of the party and prepare to bounce back.
However, former Law Minister Ashwani Kumar said the party’s “campaign managers” made mistakes and said Sonia Gandhi should take charge of the party once again from Rahul Gandhi.
