The Kolkata Knight Riders, have created havoc at the last minute to outclass the Chennai Super Kings in the tournament opener. Though reduced to 51 for 4 less than half-way into their chase of 157, KKR fought back with Andre Russell opening their campaign and ending the match with a three-wicket win.
The Lahore Lions, winners of the Faysal Bank T-20 Cup, Pakistan’s domestic T20 tournament, had competed successfully in the qualifier stage to make it to the main group stage and they have outclassed the mighty Mumbai Indians and Southern Express to become one of the two teams to progress to the top in the tournament. Captain Mohammad Hafeez was confident with the win in the Qualifiers that had given his team plenty of self-confidence.
KKR is a team with some strong destructive batsmen in the middle order, but they will know that runs from their top three is very crucial today to win the game. With Robin Uthappa not likely to be there due to a knee injury, the onus will be on skipper Gautam Gambhir to bat for the majority of the innings, the way he did in the IPL 2014.
The likes of Pathan and Russell are known to strike strokes from the word go. Ryan ten Doeschate is another key player in KKR’s batting order for his experience coupled with the ability to control the innings and to turn on the heat whenever needed.
On the bowling front, KKR have some excellent spinners. Sunil Narine, the West Indies bowler who bowled a maiden in the Super Over recently, and Piyush Chawla will be at the forefront today, while Pat Cummins and Umesh Yadav will be showing their pace to the get a win for the team.
Lahore Lions skipper Mohammad Hafeez and players like Ahmed Shehzad, Nasir Jamshed and Umar Akmal are the team’s proven match-winners with the bat, with a free-spirit to go aggressively and often running away with the match single-handedly.
Hafeez told the media in the pre-match interaction that though the team had a balanced bowling attack, the onus was on the new-ball pair to strike early. “Picking wickets in the initial overs is crucial and our bowlers have been doing that. Aizaz Cheema has led the way on that front and other bowlers like Wahab Riaz, Imran Ali and Asif Raza are also chipping in. We have a good bowling attack overall. We know doing well with the new ball is important and I hope our bowlers continue to do so,” he said.
Interestingly, no Pakistan cricketer has scored more centuries in T20 cricket than the Lahore Lions’ Ahmed Shehzad, 22, with 3 centuries in the T20 internationals. KKR hero Sunil Narine too has played at the Rajiv Gandhi Cricekt Stadium in Hyderabad creating astonishing records in the past: Overs – 20, Maidens – 1, Wickets – 4, Economy Rate – 4.15, Dot Balls – 66.
Prediction: Lahore Lions are set to surprise KKR, mainly owing to major absentees like Uthappa.
