When Telugu mega-star Chiranjeevi was almost written off from the film industry and confined to tourism development strategies as a minister in Delhi few years ago, nobody expected that the Congress icon in Andhra Pradesh would re-enter films after a gap of almost 10 years with a big bang in double role.
Now that the actor did return with his “Khaidi No. 150” wrapping up shooting, the fans of the Telugu hero are going gaga over the daily updates on his film. After an initial poster early this month, more than 150 posters have hit the walls and social media showing the 60+ actor in not more than 40 by anybody’s imagination, perhaps challenging even his own son and nephew who are popular actors.
Among those who praised the film was Mahesh Babu, who attended the mega-star’s birthday party and wished the film’s success. Mahesh Babu remembered Tagore film and said Khaidi No.150 will also become a super hit, surpassing even Tagore records. “WTF? Mega star is looking 7 years younger than I last saw him 7 years back,” tweeted director Ram Gopal verma.
The film “Khaidi No. 150”, a re-make of Tamil version “Kaththi” of AR Murugadoss and Vijay fame, will feature Kajal as heroine and VV Vinayak is the director. The story revolves around the tale of hero and his look-alike and focuses on the issue of farmers committing suicide due to corporate encroachment. The Tamil version was the highest grosser in Tamil film industry in 2014.
As 70 percent of the film is already shot, Chiranjeevi is taking time off to hit the homes of all Telugu-speaking families in the country and abroad by hosting the MAA TV show quiz show, ‘Meelo Evaru Koteeswarudu’ (MEK), replacing Nagarjuna. Will he emulate Nagarjuna or the Hindi star Amitabh Bachchan in the adaptation of Hindi show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), remains to be seen.
If MEK is successful, then he will remain live for another season next year-end, while his film career may propel him back into limelight with more thematic films and churning out special projects like Bachchan. But the writing is on the wall — Chiranjeevi is charismatic as ever and his fans prefer to see him than his second generation family heroes.
