Central University of Jharkhan New Prey to Nationalism Row?

First it was Central University of Hyderabad, next it was JNU, and now it is the Central University of Jharkhand to join the national hatred campaign unleashed by "nationalism" volunteers citing JNU’s anti-Afzal Guru event.

Astonishingly, the assistant professor who invited a former JNU professor to speak was suspended. Reason, Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu had cancelled her presence at the function as chief guest citing Panini’s presence. CUJ communication officer, Debabrata Singh, said, "A three-member committee has been formed to properly investigate the fiasco and submit a report to the vice-chancellor by Wednesday evening. By then we are expecting Bhattacharji to return to the campus and explain her stand,” Singh said.

The occasion was a function to commemorate the 140th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel held on March 19, where Prof Panini, a former sociology professor of JNU was supposed to speak but a BJP leader from Odisha and currently governor of Jharkhand cancelled her presence bringing pressure on vice chancellor who called the JNU professor not to attend the function, which the latter obliged.

But soon Shreya Bhattacharji, the assistant professor who was also the dean of students’ welfare, was suspended on March 28 for inviting MN Panini. “In exercise of power… the vice chancellor is pleased to assign the duties of dean of students’ welfare to Dr Ajai Singh, … with immediate effect till further orders,” said the harsh order issued on March 29.

“Bhattacharji’s action has tarnished the university’s reputation. Because of the invite she had sent to Panini, Jharkhand governor Droupadi Murmu, supposed to attend the function as chief guest, cancelled her visit at the last moment,” said CUJ communication officer, Debabrata Singh, on record to HT.

So, the question is whether central universities have finally bowed to the ideology of the ruling party and are living under constant pressure as the Ministry of HRD can choke them off of badly needed funds to run these universities. Moreover, the division of academic community on the lines of ideology is another achievement for BJP-ruled government as the difference was not so overwhelmingly visible in the past when Congress ruled the country.
