Dilip Kumar, Bollywood veteran actor may be conferred with the highest civilian honour Bharat Ratna, almost 18 years after neighbouring Pakistan bestowed its highest civilian honour Nishan-e-Imtiaz in 1997, unconfirmed media reports said.
Ironic but the BJP government was in power then and now. Moreover, if he is to be given Bharat Ratna, then the President has to visit Mumbai and give him the award as the actor is reportedly ill to make any journey now. The last public ceremony he attended was the function of Salman Khan’s sister Arpita pre-wedding function in Mumbai.
Born on December 12 1922, in current Pakistan as Muhammed Yusuf Khan, he changed his film name as Dilip Kumar during the 1940s and made many successful films. In the year 1980, he was appointed as Mumbai Sheriff.
The actor who is immensely loved by masses has been honoured with the Padma Bhushan in 1991, Dadasaheb Phalke award in 1994 and in 2015 with Padma Vibhushan. It is still not known what prompted the government to announce Bharat Ratna now and not in January.
Dilip Kumar started his career with 1944 debut ‘Jwar Bhata.’ His other movies which brought him fame were Mughal-e-Azam, Devdas, Ram aur Shyam, Ganga Jamuna and other movies.
