Two passengers were killed and manu injured when the Bangalore-Ernakulam Intercity Express derailed near Hosur this morning at 7:45 am.
Hosur is the border town of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and was entering Bangalore when a boulder on the track derailed the train’s four bogies.
“As per the information available, two people have died and several others have been injured in the train derailment,” one railway official told IANS.
The train was bound to Bangalore from Ernakulam in Kerala and the D8 coach or second class sitting bogey has taken the maximum hit, according to the official.
Earlier, a passenger onboard, Cyriac Mathew, told the media over telephone that the accident occurred around 7.45 a.m. and that he had seen three bodies. However, officials confirmed the death of two passengers so far.
“The worst affected was the coach D-8. I could see the bodies of two men and a woman in the coach…,” said Mathew, who is a regular traveller on the train.
“Police and the ambulance arrived an hour after the accident,” Mattew said.
He said some passengers have suffered minor injuries and that rescue operations are underway.
Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu said that he was monitoring the situation and was in touch with local and state officials.
Meanwhile, ambulances from Bangalore and Tamil Nadu have been rushed to the spot and officials are coordinating rescue operations, officials said. A rescue train has also been rushed from Erode in Tamil Nadu to help the stranded passengers, said officials, giving the helpline numbers:
