The much-awaited Asiad 2014 was kicked off Friday at Incheon in South Korea with world-famous singer Psy going “Gangnam Style” on the stage at 3:30 pm IST at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium.
The Ceremony was opened with an on-screen video showing the special features of 45 participating nations and 29 languages used in these 45 nations in respect and consideration for 45 participating nations.
In all 45 nations are taking part in the 17th Asian Games Incheon 2014 representing 4.5 billion Asians. The number ‘45’ features a Nepalese in a traditional Nepalese costume with a traditional Nepalese musical instrument along with the sun and the moon, the symbols of the national flag of Nepal. The number ‘44’ represents East Timor and the number ‘43’ represents Laos, and the last number ‘1’ features Republic of Korea on the video. From India, Sardar Singh carry the Indian flag.

“Unlike the previous Asian Games and Olympics that focused on flaunting their national power, such as 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games, 2012 London Olympics, and 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics, the opening and closing ceremonies of the 2014 Incheon Asian Games won’t simply show off a scale but try to deliver a clear message: ‘4.5 billion Asians’ dream, Asia as one,” ceremony’s director Jang Jin said.
“We will display Korea’s past and future by combining the characters and identities of Korea with its digital technology,” he said in a statement.
South Korean stars Kim Seong-Ju and Yun Su-yeong will host the Opening Ceremony as well as the Closing Ceremony which will be on 4 October. While Psy will take the centre stage, violist Richard Yongjae O’Neill, gugak performer Ahn Suk-seon, pianist Lang Lang, soprano Jo Su-mi and cellist Song Yeong-hun perform on the stage.
Through the electronic board of Incheon Asiad Main Stadium, Yoo Jeongbok, Mayor of the host city, will introduce Incheon to the audience welcoming the audience and participants. “Incheon is a green and future-oriented city where information technology and the infrastructure for a wide variety of latest industries strike a harmony with nature,” he said.
