Apple Inc. is said to be facing an unprecedented problem which could delay the release of its upcoming flagship smartphone, iPhone 6. After reports of the company having issue over manufacturing of battery that could fit into the ultra-thin handset, another issue has reportedly crept in with supply chain feeling the need to redesign the panel of the much-awaited handset.
Sources from supply chain told Reuters that suppliers of Apple Inc. are having hard time manufacturing screens of iPhone 6 ahead of its release next month because of the “need to redesign a key component disrupted panel production.” The source went on to say that the issue could delay launch or limit the number of handsets on the day of release.
“Two supply chain sources said display panel production suffered a setback after the backlight that helps illuminate the screen had to be revised, putting screen assembly on hold for part of June and July,” reported Reuters. The source added that suppliers are working hard to make up for the lost time, trying to add more light by fitting an extra layer instead of the previously planned single layer of backlight film.
The Cupertino giant hasn’t revealed the exact release date of its next-generation smartphone but it is most likely to happen on 9 September, as it has scheduled a media event on the day. The company is expected to launch two models of iPhone 6 – one with a 4.7-inch screen and the other 5.5-inch. The smaller variant may have a screen resolution of 1920x1080p (440ppi) while the larger model may have a 2272×1280 (510ppi) resolution.
The iPhone 6 is expected to come with a 20-nanometer A8 chip (64-bit) processor and run on iOS 8 operating system. It may house an 8MP camera, which is seen in its predecessor iPhone 5s, but with upgrades like flash and Optical Image Stabilization. According to unconfirmed reports that have appeared so far, the 4.7-inch variant may come with either 2,100 mAh or 1,800 mAh battery, while the 5.5-inch model may have a 2,500 mAh battery.
It is also reported that Apple’s new device may have several features like Touch ID fingerprint security, NFC, metal casing, and low temperature polysilicon in-cell touch panels. In a post on social media, Chinese analyst Sun Chang Xu claimed that iPhone 6 will feature sensors that can detect pressure, temperature and humidity.
